This guide provides best practices for choosing high-quality hero banner images, covering key areas such as image composition, use of negative space, and technical requirements. Because clients may not always be familiar with how images are cropped or displayed on their website, this resource helps ensure submitted images align well with our design layouts. It can be shared with clients during the image collection stage to streamline the process and improve the final results.

Hero Banner Imagery Guidelines for Your Website

To ensure your website’s hero banner looks professional and visually engaging, please follow these guidelines when providing images. These best practices will help maintain a clean, high-quality appearance while optimizing text placement and responsive design.

Recommended Image Types
We suggest using one of the following image types for your hero banner:

  1. Team Photo: A high-quality image of your dental team.

  2. Exterior of Your Practice: A well-lit and welcoming photo of the building.

  3. Interior of Your Office: A clean, inviting image showcasing your practice’s environment.

Image Composition & Negative Space

What is negative space? Negative space is the empty or blank area around the main subject of an image. It helps the important parts stand out and keeps things from looking too crowded. In design and photography, leaving enough empty space makes everything look cleaner and easier to read or focus on.

To avoid cropping issues and ensure readability, please follow these composition guidelines:

For Team Photos:

  • Ensure plenty of negative space above the center of focus (i.e., team members) so faces are not cut off by the navigation menu.

  • If including a landing page slogan or text, position the team on the right side, leaving negative space on the left side for text placement.

For Exterior & Interior Office Photos:

  • Ensure there is negative space at the top of the image, especially if a sign is included, so it does not get cut off by the website layout.

  • If the image will include text overlay, make sure there is a clean, uncluttered space where the text can be easily read.

JPG Image Requirements
To ensure the best quality and performance, all hero banner images must be in JPEG format (.jpg or .jpeg) and meet the following specifications:

  • Landscape Orientation: Hero banners work best with wide (16:9 or similar) aspect ratios.

  • High Resolution: Images should be around 1920px x 1280px to ensure crisp display on all screen sizes.

  • No Heavy Filters or Overlays: Keep images natural to maintain brand authenticity.

  • Good Lighting: Natural or professional lighting is preferred for a polished look.

  • Avoid Cluttered Backgrounds: A clean background enhances visual appeal and readability.

Examples of Good Hero Banner Imagery

  • A well-lit team photo with extra space above heads:

  • Team photo with center-of-focus aligned to the right:

  • A welcoming exterior photo with a clear view of the practice’s signage:

  • A bright, organized interior office space that highlights a comfortable patient experience:

By following these recommendations, your hero banner will create a strong first impression and accurately showcase your dental practice. If you need any assistance in selecting the right images, don’t hesitate to reach out!
